Wind Turbine in Richmound?

Sask Power is running a program to test wind turbines in Saskatchewan on hockey Rinks. They are going to set up 4 turbines in the province which will be completely funded by Sask Power for 5 years. After that time the town will take over the maintenance cost and all power generated will go to the rink.

We submitted our proposal in January along with 107 other community's in Saskatchewan. On Tuesday, the projects group of people came to town to check the Arena and possible turbine locations, and we were informed that we are 1 of 10 that may receive one of the four turbines. They will make their decision in April. The location of the turbine would be by the weigh scale near the sports grounds. If you have any questions, you can phone Brent Koch, or Laurie Baron at the Village office, or ask any Arena Board Member.

For more information on the program go to this website for an overview of the project.

Lions Lair

Saskatchewan faces the highest prevalence of diabetes in the Prairies”

This was the headline in the most recent issue of “The Lion’s Pride”, the newspaper sent monthly to every Lions club in Saskatchewan. Diabetes and the struggle to deal with it is a reality. And the Richmound Lions Club wants to help do something about it. Please help the local Lions in their Diabetes Drive which will culminate with a Friendship Night in the Richmound Community Hall on Saturday, April 9 – public welcome, of course. The evening will include presentations on not only Diabetes but also on other Lions-related causes such as Saskatchewan Blind Sports, MS Liberation Treatment in Costa Rica (by Tammy Welte and Kendra Lehmann) and children’s Medic Alert Bracelets (Carey Hellman). Auction/raffles will be feature a racing bib autographed by Olympic Skeleton from Manitoba and Gold Medallist Jon Montgomery Washington Capitals NHL sweater autographed (and including a personal letter of authenticity) by Brooks Laich. *Please note separate story in this Newsletter.*

Supper will be served at 6:30; program to follow. Save $ by getting advance tickets from any Richmound Lion for just $15.00 or 2 for $25.00; $20.00 each at the door. Donations for the Diabetes Drive should be boxed or bagged and need to be fit for re-sale at Value Village (Medicine Hat). Items are accepted in order to be re-sold, not donated. Almost any household items in good condition – including clothes and small appliances – are welcome. Please, no large or “soft” furniture (sofas, etc) or dangerous items – chemical, petroleum, etc. Call Lion Gordon at 669-2023 or Lion Mario (669-2026) to make early donations; let’s fill the Canadian Diabetes truck on April 9.

Lions Youth Exchange: Any families interested in hosting one or two 17 year-old Japanese girls for a month this summer starting the 3rd week in July is asked to call Lion Gordon at 669-2023.

Men of Steel at the Wheel” (reprinted from a brief collection of vehicle-related good deeds by athletes in the February 21, 2011 Sports Illustrated, the world’s best-selling sports magazine.)

APRIL 18, 2010

Fresh off his team’s having blown a 3-1 playoff advantage with a Game 7 loss to the Canadiens, Capitals center Brooks Laich is driving home when he spots a mother and daughter, decked out in Caps gear, standing by a car with a blown tire. Laich, dressed in a suit, spends 20 minutes fixing the flat, apologizes for the loss and shares a few hugs. “I figured my tire expertise outweighed theirs,” he says.

The parents of Brooks are both from the town of Leader where his dad was a teacher and his dad’s sister Janet and her husband Keith Koch and family live at Fox Valley. The above story was widely circulated last spring, gaining Brooks a nice measure of fame for his good deed. He and his Capitals are currently doing well and you could acquire his sweater by auction at the Richmound Lions Diabetes Drive & Friendship Night on April 9.
